"Don't Be a Jerk" Jackfruit Tacos

So I am definitely going to be one of those bloggers that makes you read through erroneous information before getting to the good stuff...aka, the recipe! #sorrynotsorry Ahhhhh the jackfruit; you may be asking what the heck is Kata talking about now?? IS jackfruit a fruit? a veggie? something from another planet? Jackfruits are a tropical fruit that belongs to the fig tree family. It is known for its mildly sweet flavor and is easy to use in vegetarian dishes wanting to emulate pulled pork or chicken. Which is why it is SO FREAKING delicious as Jerk Tacos and BBQ sandwiches. It is incredibly easy to use (especially when you cheat like me and get it canned from @traderjoes) and is very adaptable for many recipes. It's jam pack full of Vitamin C, B6, and potassium. With little calories!

The only downside to this fabulous fruit is there is little to no protein, so it is not a good substitute when you need lots of protein in your diet (it only contains like 2% protein) but it IS full of fiber! When cooking with jackfruit is it SO important to buy "green" jackfruit or unripe jackfruit! While it is in its younger days, its flavor only contains a hint of sweetness; however, when fully ripe it can taste more like a combination of an apple, mango, banana, and pineapple... not something I want to try to eat in place of pulled pork, but for dessert maybe...

Ok, Ok now on to the good stuff. The reason you graced my lovely blog to begin with, the recipe! I recommend making the sauce first, because you will need it to cook the jack fruit

"Don't be a Jerk" Sauce:


  • 1 medium white onion chopped (about 1/2 a cup)

  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Chili powder to taste (I like to make mine spicy and will use up to a tablespoon, but you can use as little as 1/2 teaspoon

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt


  • Heat medium saucepan with oil, add the onion, stirring frequently until it is softened

  • Stir in Ketchup, water, vinegar, brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, chili powder, paprika, and celery salt.

  • Bring sauce to a boil

Jackfruit Tacos:


  • Two cans of Trader Joes "Green Jackfruit" Quartered

  • Half white onion minced

  • Two cloves of garlic minced

  • Teaspoon of olive oil

  • 2 1/2 cups "Don't be a Jerk" Sauce

  • 1/2 cup water


  • Drain, rinse, and dry Jackfruit quarters

  • Heat nonstick pan/skillet with tsp of olive oil

  • Add garlic and onion to hot pan, stirring often, until cooked.

  • Add quartered jackfruit and stir, allowing jackfruit to brown.

  • Add 1 1/2 cup "Don't be a Jerk" sauce and 1/2 cup water; bring to boil and allow to cook off

  • Once sauce has cooked off, smash jackfruit with fork or potato smasher to create "pulled meat" essence

  • Mix in remaining "Don't be a Jerk Sauce"

  • Serve in soft/hard taco shells and add any topping you'd like

Suggested toppings:

  • Goat Cheese (really any cheese)

  • Purple Cabbage

  • Salsa

  • Diced mango/pineapple (grilled pineapple would be totally delicious)

  • Avocado/gauc

  • Cilantro (only if it doesn't taste like soap for you!)

  • Hot sauce

  • Greek yogurt/sour cream

  • Lettuce

  • Tomatoes
